Occasional Lecture Program
The Forum for Contemporary Theory, under its Occasional Lecture Program, invites scholars of eminence to deliver a seminar/lecture on issues and concerns of theoretical relevance. In this way, the Forum hopes to provide a space for critical exchange among scholars as well as contribute in some way to the city’s academic development and furtherance.
Lord Bhikhu Parekh, Professor of Political Philosophy at the University of Westminster, has kindly accepted our invitation and agreed to give a talk on “Reason and Identity” on Wednesday, 3rd September 2008 at 4.30pm at the Centre for Contemporary Theory and General Semantics. The talk would be chaired by Dr. V V Modi, Member of Trust, Forum on Contemporary Theory.
Educated at the Universities of Bombay and London, Bhikhu Parekh is today recognized as among the most accomplished scholars on political philosophy. He has held professorships at such universities as Hull, British Columbia, McGill, Harvard, Pennsylvania, the London School of Economics and the Institute of Advanced Studies in Vienna, among others. Between 1998 and 2000 Professor Parekh was Chair of the Runnymede Commission on the Future of Multi-Ethnic Britain. He has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and of the Learned Societies for Social Sciences. In 2000, he was appointed a life peer as Baron Parekh; in 2002 he was awarded the Sir Isaiah Berlin Prize for life time contribution to political philosophy; and in 2007 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. Professor Parekh’s association with Baroda has been significant as he served as the Vice Chancellor of the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda between 1981 and 1984.
Professor Parekh is the author of several books some of which are A New Politics of Identity (2008); Gandhi (2001); Rethinking Multiculturalism: Cultural Diversity and Political Theory (2000); Colonialism, Tradition and Reform (1999); Gandhi’s Political Philosophy (1989); Contemporary Political Thinkers (1982); Karl Marx’s Theory of Ideology (1981); and Hannah Arendt and the Search for a New Political Philosophy (1981).
